Bats beat Rattlers in Instant Classic, 6-5 (June 16)
Winchester – The Lane Funeral Home Bats (#4) won a tight battle over the Dream Big Hockeystars Rattlers (#3) on a summery Saturday night at Nutile Field to claim the 2018 AA League Championship.
It started as a pitcher’s duel between Stephen McCabe for the Rattlers and Luke Sardone for the Bats with the game scoreless going into the third inning. The Bats got on the board first with 2 runs in the third on a double by Luke Sardone (2 RBI) that scored Alistair Dattoli and Simone Bartalini.
The Rattlers offense got going in the 4th and pushed three runs across on RBI hits by George Boksanski and William Beach. The Rattlers then brought in Michael Condron to pitch and he battled to keep his team in the lead over the fourth and fifth innings.
Mitchell Collins came in for relief duties starting in the fifth and worked his way around a couple of walks to keep the game close. In the top of the sixth, the Bats broke out once again, scoring 4 runs on some timely hitting and aggressive base running.
The Rattlers had the top of their lineup batting in the bottom of the sixth and they weren’t going down easy. After a couple of walks, Tarabelsi drove one to center scoring 2 and bringing them to within a run of the lead. Collins reared back and got the next two batters on strikeouts to slam the door shut on the Rattlers.
The crowd was going wild, the weather was perfect and a great game was played. Congratulations to both teams for making it to the finals and to the Bats for a well-earned victory!
