Phillies top Angels in opener (April 24)

The Winchester Orthodontics Angels and the Fells True Value Hardware Phillies played a fantastic season opener at McDonald Field on a beautiful warm evening, Monday, April 24.

The Phillies gained an early lead, scoring one run in the first when Quinn Johansen hit a leadoff double and was subsequently driven in by James Wheaton. Will Gans also walloped a triple in the first.

The Phillies got runners on base in the second inning with Will Simon gaining a walk and Jason Feng providing a hard-hit single. In the third inning, the Angels threatened with Addison Walsh hit by a pitch and Timmy Parsons gaining a walk.

The Phillies solidified their lead with two more runs in the fourth inning with Will Gans gaining a base on balls and scoring when Andrew Colli pounded a triple. Andrew was driven in by Will Simon. The Phillies scored one more run in the fifth inning when Jason Feng was hit by a pitch and driven in by Harry Lowenstein's single.

We saw strong pitching performances from both teams. The Angels also had very strong pitching performances from Robbie Scapicchio, Manon Eckton and Grady Gaul. Phillies starting pitcher Harry Lowenstein threw three scoreless innings for the win. William Gans pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Phillies.

Both teams' pitching and fielding was particularly impressive for so early in the season.
