A's Top Red Sox in Seesaw Battle, 7-5 (May 31)
On the final day of the regular season, with potential playoff implications for both teams, the New England OB/GYN Athletics defeated the Middlesex Surgical Assoc Red Sox by a score of 7-5, in a crisp ballgame on a pleasant Wednesday evening.
The Red Sox struck first, as Thomas Mackey drew a one-out walk and was driven in on a double by Gannon Austin. The A's answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, on a leadoff triple to right by AJ Muse, an RBI single by Dante Zermani, and singles by Josh Lacey and Will Fuller.
After a quiet second inning, the Red Sox took a 4-2 lead, with Ty Minton scoring on a Mackey single, and Jack Siciliano and Mackey scoring on a triple to the left field corner by Declan Mahoney.
But the A's answered again, this time with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead. A leadoff single by Oliver Fanton, and walks to Zermani and Tommy Lampert, were followed by an RBI single by Austin Curtis, and a 2-RBI single by Lacey. The fourth run came across on a hard-hit ball by Fuller.
The Red Sox answered in the fourth, with Brennan McCarthy leading off with a walk and coming around to score to cut the lead to one. The A's added an insurance run in the fifth, on hits by Muse and Zermani.
A's closer Sam Kritzman shut the door on the Red Sox, with three innings of no-hit ball, and was supported by some excellent glove work by shortstop Lampert and centerfielder Carson Muse. The Sox got excellent pitching performaces from Mahoney, Dario Volo, and Austin.
