A's Down Orioles in Tight Pitcher's Duel (May 4)
The A's struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a long triple to center by AJ Muse, who later scored on some aggressive base running. In the third, Connor Pandolph led off with a single (for his first career Majors hit), and came around to score on a single by Muse.
The A's held a 2-0 lead after three innings, due to solid pitching by Antonio Zermani (2 hits, 7 strikeouts). But the Orioles battled back, plating one run in the fourth, on a double by Michael Cashell (his first of two hits on the night) and an RBI single by Eric Chen. The A's averted further damage, when second baseman Pandolph, shortstop Tommy Lampert and first baseman Austin Curtis turned a stellar 4-6-3 double play to stop the O's in their tracks.
Nursing a 2-1 lead in the fourth, the A's pushed across two more runs, highlighted by Sam Kritzman driving in Josh Lacey with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Orioles scored one more run in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2, with Will Fortier scoring on a single by James Lyon. But A's closer Sam Kritzman shut the door on the O's chances for a comeback with some crafty relief pitching.
The Orioles had excellent pitching performances by Quinny Crowe, Danny Markham, and Gus Sendlenski, but the A's trio of Zermani, Muse, and Kritzman effectively held the O's bats at bay to earn the A's their first victory of the season.
