Teams and Rosters
When will teams be selected for the spring season?
Only teams in the Majors (10-12 baseball), which are selected right after tryouts in September, are determined before the end of March. All other teams must wait until the March 15 registration deadline passes so we can determine the number of teams that will be fielded. At that point, coaches can be finalized and then teams selected. We try to complete the process before April 1 for all teams 9yrs and up but that is not always possible. Younger teams, since they don't practice prior to the season, may not be made until later in April.
How are the teams selected?
For leagues whose players are about 3rd grade and above, we draft teams as a means of distributing talent as evenly as we can. The theory is that each coach, acting in his team's best interest, will select the very best players he knows from among those available. Of course, results typically vary from this ideal for many reasons, but we try. Younger leagues are selected, not by draft, but principally based on their schools so they can be with their classmates. Because we also have private school players and unbalanced numbers among Winchester schools, this does not always work perfectly.
Can I find out what other players are on my child's team?
Yes, when the teams are made and entered into our database, the results can be seen online. Login to mySYBS and click on the link that is the name of your child's team. Each of his/her teammates names will appear. You can only do this for your child's team, not the other teams in the league.
My child can hit a pitched ball. Can he/she play in a more advanced league?
Batting tees are a tool for helping teach hitting mechanics and concentration. They are used by players at all levels including most professionals. Please do not view it as a stigma if your child is asked to use a hitting tee during games or practice.
When do the games begin?
For most leagues, the first games are during the first week after returning from April school vacation. Babe Ruth and Babe Ruth Prep usually begin just before the vacation.
Where will the games be played?
Most leagues play all their games in Winchester. Only Babe Ruth, Babe Ruth Prep and Senior Softball play a portion (less than half) of their games in nearby towns.
When and where will the schedules be available?
Schedules will be published exclusively on this website. They will be posted as soon as they are available, for most leagues in early April, at least a couple of weeks prior to the season. Generally, the oldest leagues' schedules are published first and the youngest leagues last.
What kinds of schedules do you provide?
We provide schedules in several formats so that you can refer to the format most convenient for you. These include:
- Full season schedules
- "Week ahead" schedules that are helpful to a busy family wanting to see its entire family's games in one consolidated schedule (See link in left sidebar of this page.)
- Today's game (See Gameday.)
When should players arrive for their games?
This is up to the individual coaches. Some may provide you a general rule for the entire season, but in this may vary. For initial planning purposes, figure 30 minutes before game time, but again, check with your coach to be sure.
What if the weather is bad?
Inclement weather is a fact of life. When it happens, we try to announce postponements as early as possible. In iffy situations, which seem to be occur on most showery days, we will announce postponements by 90 minutes before game time on this website. After the 90 minute cutoff, the decision will be made at the field on a game-by-game basis. Note also, that a postponement on one field or by one league does not mean that the same will be true of others. Fields puddle and drain at different rates and one cannot be judged from another.
Will there be practices?
Teams in most leagues will practice before the season and, fields permitting, on occasion during the season as well.
Are practices mandatory?
Practices are very much part of the youth baseball/softball experience. We try to teach mechanical and game skills to our players. Practices are necessary for them to learn and for the learning to become instilled. We ask all players to try to participate fully in all their games and practices.
How will I find out about practice times?
Ultimately from the coach. We will post practice dates, times and locations for you by league and team. However, unlike games, practices are subject to change on short notice, so it is best to rely on what your coach tells you.
How do we register?
There are several ways to register. Upwards of 80% of our registrations are now done online because it is so quick and easy. To do so, just join mySYBS or, if you already have, you may just login.

Is there a deadline?
Yes, the deadline is March 15 to be assured a roster spot for this season. We must receive the registration form and your payment by March 15.
What if we miss the deadline?
You may still register and be eligible to fill a roster spot on a space-available basis. Unlike those who submit timely registrations, you will not be guaranteed a spot, but if one is available, it will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. So it is still advisable to register as early as possible, even if past the deadline. Those who do not get rostered will be eligible for full refunds.
My son/daughter is an excellent athlete. Can he/she be put with older players?
No, SYBS policy is that all players must remain in their age groups..
Is spring enrollment necessary in order to play in your summer leagues?
Absolutely, yes. Our league rules are very clear and adamant on this point. In order to be eligible for summer play of any kind, a player must be registered for spring and play in at least half of his/her team's game during that season. The only exception would be for medical reasons verified by a doctor, but timely registration for the spring season would still be required.
